The Limu
Lab
Growing limu for Hawaiʻi's shorelines, tables, and future.
The limu our kūpuna knew, thriving again.
Rooted in culture.
Grown with science.
Hawaiʻi doesn't have the seed supply, infrastructure or technical support needed to grow many of our most important limu.
Some of the more vulnerable and commercially valuable species, like līpoa, kohu and wāwaeʻiole, have only ever been wild harvested. We're a limu nursery and lab working to change that. We grow seed stock, produce seeded substrates, develop ways to culture new species, and work closely with each grower and restoration group.
It's all part of a bigger effort to restore native limu, bring back access to culturally significant foods, and perpetuate traditional knowledge and practices.
Whether you're growing limu, restoring a shoreline, or just getting started, we'd love to hear what you're working on.
Our work, from reef to community.
We believe experiential and ancestral knowledge isn't something any one person or company can own. As we learn, we share what we can with the growers, researchers, and communities caring for limu across Hawaiʻi.
